A day at the park

The girls and I are quite bored these days.
The pool is closed during the day.
We’ve seen all the movies on their list.
I’ve already purchased their school gear.
We’ve been to the museums.

On a whim, I decided to take a picnic to our local state park today.
It was hot, but the hiking trails are all in the shade.

They had a great time exploring and want to go back.
And they learned a lot, too.
Which is always a day well spent.

And this little stinker goes for Kindergarten assessment tomorrow.
Which means we’re one step closer to actually starting school – on September 9.

And Cailyn is super excited about Preschool open house next week.
She also starts school on September 9.

My end-of-Summer Haiku

(Alternate title: Carys finally jumped off the darn diving board and went down the darn slide. Finally. After I pleaded with her to try it all Summer. And her friends convinced her in 3 seconds.)

Summer is fading
She dove right into the deep
And is scared no more

Happy Birthday Blaine!

005a
In about 21 minutes, my baby brother will turn 21.

I remember waiting around the hospital to see you on August 14, 1988 — and I couldn’t wait to be your big sister.
Twenty-one years later, and you’re a sweet guy with a big heart and I’m proud to call you my bruddah. Most of the time anyway. You loved to try to embarrass me in front of my dates, steal my “cool pencils” from my backpack and ask me a million questions about girls.
Now that I think about it, you’re pretty lucky I let you live to be 21. You could have just been 7 and called it quits.

Happy, Happy Birthday Blaine!

This year is a year of BIG birthdays for both my brother & I.
21 and 30.
We are so getting old!

Eavesdropping on the Maids

Carys: Let’s clean the playroom. You clean up this, this, this and this.

Cailyn: What are you gonna do then?

Carys: Watch. I’m practicing to be a mommy.

Out of all the things I do in a given day, Carys sums it all up as “watching”.
Somehow, I think I will be reminding her of this when she has kiddos of her own one day.
Little stinker!

Summertime is…

Things are about to change around here. For the better. Even though I don’t quite believe that myself, not quite yet.
My baby is going to kindergarten. My tiny baby is going to preschool. I am actually going to leave the house to go to a very flexible part-time job.

It hit me a few weeks ago that our “pack-it-up-and-leave-on-a-whim” days are numbered.
Granted, we aren’t really the “pack-it-up-and-leave-on-a-whim” type of people. But I don’t like being told what to do. So I feel the need to pack it and leave on a whim. Just because.

Yep. Things are sure going to be different.
In a good way, of course – at least, that’s what I’m told.

Since our Summer days (and nights) will soon come to an end, I thought I’d share some photos of the fun we’ve had so far this Summer. Despite the sticky hot humidity, it’s our favorite season by far.
Enjoy.

The State of IT

itChad had his MRI yesterday at 11:30.
Imagine my surprise when I received a call from his oncologist two hours later with the results!
I immediately thought the worst when I heard Dr. Reilly’s voice. Why would he be calling so immediately? They always make us wait a week or so before they divulge the results.

Before I share them with you, let me just say that we also went to Winston-Salem today for Chad’s shunt reprogramming. The neurosurgeon, Dr. Tatter, was on vacation. Our usual PA was on vacation. So we saw someone new. And she confirmed the exact same thing about Chad’s MRI, without consulting Dr. Reilly or seeing his notes or the official report from the hospital’s radiology staff.

I’m sure you’ll remember that we were hoping to shrink IT. As much as possible.
We understood it was a long shot that we would actually be able to shrink IT, but it was our goal.
Any shrinkage at all would be phenomenal news.

Unfortunately, we didn’t shrink IT.
IT is mostly unchanged.

We are disappointed.
It’s not the best of news; but it’s not necessarily bad news either.

There is no way to know right now, but we hope that Chad’s six weeks of radiation killed off any free radical cells that were attempting to create another new tumor.
And there is no new growth. That’s good phenomenal news.

So, what does all of this mean?
We’re not exactly sure. The doctors aren’t exactly sure.
We have yet to talk with Dr. Tatter, whose input we value immensely.
We hope he will have some answers for us as to what this means for Chad’s future.

How is Chad doing these days?
He’s doing well. He’s back at work, a few hours a day.
He walks around our neighborhood almost nightly. His appetite is back.
I would say he’s pretty much himself again, just a little easier to tire out.

What is the next round of treatment?
Chad has done everything he can.
He’s completed 10 months of  high-dose chemotherapy.
He has had a tumor resection, and had a large part of the primary tumor removed.
He has had a full course of radiation with low-dose chemo.

Chad has met his max for radiation – he can not have radiation again.
He is also determined to stay away from chemotherapy, if possible.

We hope he starts to feel more like himself now that treatment is completely behind him.
The only way to know is to wait and see what happens.

And in the meantime, life goes on.

Motherhood is…

Happy Friday!

Friday Feast: Lemondrop Cookies

I had a request for lemon sugar cookies for an event. I tried to lemonize my favorite sugar cookie recipe, but it didn’t quite turn out as I’d hoped. After a little research and some trial and error, I have found a delectable lemon cookie – a perfect Summer treat. Cool, crisp and perfectly lemony! They’re slightly crispy on the outside and wonderfully tender on the inside.

And you won’t believe how easy they are to whip up.

lemondrop cookies
Lemondrop Cookies

1 box lemon cake mix
1 small tub of Cool Whip (8oz)
1 egg
grated rind from 1 lemon
1 tsp almond or vanilla extract
powdered sugar for rolling

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
In a bowl, mix all ingredients except for the powdered sugar.
Drop by rounded teaspoon into a plate of powdered sugar.
Roll into a ball and place the dough on a greased cookie sheet.
You may flatten them if you wish, or they will bake into cute little mounds.
Bake for 11-13 minutes.
Cool on rack and enjoy!

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

You can check this recipe, along with others, over at the Friday Feast.
I’m trying to get back into trying new recipes more frequently than I have been lately – so feel free to email your favorites to me — I’d love to try it out!

And things get a little closer to normal….again

A few weeks ago, I wasn’t sure that Chad would be able to return to work, as we had hoped. His memory was very fuzzy, his concentration poor, he was severely exhausted, and his focus was patchy. I was just unsure. Chad was determined to get back to work by the end of this month, and I was stressing because I knew he wasn’t ready — and he was going to go despite that fact.

Today, I am happy to report that Chad went back to work Monday — for the first time in FOUR MONTHS.
He is taking his time, and going in for a couple of hours each day. He’s even driving, which is huge.

Again, I must express my eternal gratitude for his coworkers that donated time to Chad. The extra time is enabling him to get back into the groove slowly, which is just what he needs. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

As for the rest of us, we are getting back on track slowly, too.

For the last two weeks, Carys has been attending an early-entry Kindergarten program for a few hours each morning. I drop her off at 8:30, and pick her up at 11:30. She has met some new friends and is once again excited about starting Kindergarten in the Fall.
I opted for to attend this early-entry program because she was so anxious about leaving us each day. She was excited, but would get weepy when we talked about going to big girl school. She gets very upset every time we go somewhere and Chad doesn’t go with us; trips to the beach, the pool, the grocery store, etc. Sure, she doesn’t like to be apart from me either, but she is old enough to know that something just wasn’t right around here. I needed to show her that she could go to school and we would still be here when she got back. Everything would be fine.
I think we’ve helped her with her anxiety as she’s been pretty excited to go to school for the last two weeks.
We’ve purchased all of her supplies for the school year, and I think it’s going to go well. At least, I hope so!

Cailyn is doing well. She’s been my little shadow, like usual.
We ran into the preschool director last week and she Cailyn chatted her up about the upcoming school year.
She is excited to hear who her teacher will be, and has been very excited to pick out things for school.
She attended VBS with Carys and two friends last week and she did much better than I anticipated. Granted, she wouldn’t stay in the 3-year-old class, but she fit right in with the 5-year-olds.
Chad and I attended the close of VBS – here is a snippet of the girls, Hannah & Faith – rockin’ out! They did so well, and I am so stinkin’ proud of CaiCai for being such a big girl without me every night. She learned the songs and the dance moves – I chuckled the whole time she was dancing.

And me?
Well, I’m doing really well. I’m glad to see that things are falling back into place.
I’m ecstatic that I have my husband back, for the most part.
I’m thrilled that we’re getting a little bit of a normal Summer – the girls needs it and so do I!
I’m finally back in the kitchen on a regular basis, since Chad’s appetite is back.
I’ve not really been very busy with work, except for the last few weeks – which is a huge blessing. It was nice to have some time “off”, but I’m looking forward to finding my work groove again, too.

Thank you for all of your support and prayers! We appreciate them greatly.
Keep checking in with us – we’ll have more to share on IT in the coming weeks.

My funny child

Carys and one of her friends asked me if I had a baby in my tummy yesterday. Yikes.
I wanted to reply, “No, I just like donuts. A lot.” But I didn’t. I laughed. Because I do like donuts. And, well, food in general.

And then I took it for what it was; a nice little reminder that I don’t have to stress eat anymore (or at least as frequently) and I need to take care of myself now that the man of the house is feeling better. So, thank you to the Truth-Telling Little People in my life.

While we’re on the topic of big bellies, I thought I would share this Carys funny with you.

Carys likes to write – anything and everything. Her new favorite thing to do is copy the headlines on magazine covers. She could do that for hours. It gives her practice at forming letters & I’m all for it!

But, there is a slight problem with her new hobby.
She has no idea what she is writing. Sure, she knows the letters, but she can’t read them.

She was working away yesterday, making a “card” for her VBS teacher. She’s a sweet girl – she likes to make cards for everyone. I let her go on and wasn’t paying much attention to what she was writing, or what she was writing on.
Luckily, I noticed a rolled up napkin in her hand as she was heading out the door for VBS and I asked her if I could see it.

Oh. My.
Am I ever glad that I checked the “card” before she lovingly (and unknowingly) passed it on to her VBS teacher.

a099

Oh yes, you read that correctly.

The first line has some random letters and her name, followed by:
FLATTEN
BELLY
BULGE
Carys : )

Whoa. Whoa. And WHOA.

I laughed so hard, and Carys didn’t understand what was so funny. I wouldn’t let her take the card to VBS, which she pouted about. But she got over it after I promised to help her make a different card today.

That child. She is so funny. And she doesn’t even try most of the time.
And I sincerely hope I can get her off the topic of bulging bellies!
